Identifying Your Causes of Alcohol Abuse

Why do you drink? More importantly, why do you drink so much? When someone has an addiction, there’s usually an underlying cause that makes them go to such extremes. Either they feel lonely, or they are trying to cover a certain emotion rather than dealing with it with a rational mind. If you abuse alcohol, it’s important to find out why you do what you do. When you can pinpoint your causes of alcohol abuse, you’ll be one step closer to quitting your addiction for good.

When You Drink

The best way to find your causes of alcohol abuse is to consciously think about when you drink. For instance, do you drink at night before you go to bed or do you only drink in the afternoon, or even first thing in the morning? When you know what times you drink, you can then begin to find your causes of alcohol abuse. Think about how you feel right before you begin drinking. Are you trying to cover up an emotion or are you trying to forget something? If you find that you only drink right before you go to bed, is it because you are bored? Or are you dreading having to go to bed by yourself? Write these causes of alcohol abuse down on paper and explore each one. That is the first step to quitting your addiction for good.

Exploring The Causes

Sometimes, by exploring the causes of alcohol abuse, you may uncover an underlying cause you didn’t even think about. For example, if you only drink at night and you suspect that you are drinking because you are dreading having to sleep alone, you may actually be drinking because something happened to you early in your life that happened when you were sleeping alone. Whatever your causes of alcohol abuse, by thinking about them you are less likely to pick up the bottle. People have all kinds of causes of alcohol abuse, as everyone is different, but it’s important to identify these causes. You may think you’re just drinking because you’re bored but it’s not until you begin to explore the causes of alcohol abuse that you’ll uncover the underlying, true, causes for your drinking habit.

The causes of alcohol abuse may not be easy to confront, but this step is necessary if you want to finally put the bottle down so that you can get back to living life the way it was meant to be lived.
